Listing grades

In England and Wales, listed buildings are classified in three grades:

Grade I buildings are of exceptional interest, sometimes considered to be internationally important. Just 2.5% of listed buildings are Grade I.

Grade II* buildings are particularly important buildings of more than special interest. 5.5% of listed buildings are Grade II*.

Grade II buildings are nationally important and of special interest. 92% of all listed buildings are in this class and it is the most likely grade of listing for a private residential building.

The following is in a different order than in the listing, to reflect the direction of entry from the east (Church Lane) or west (path from the school) approaches to the porch and north door as they are in 2017 at present and slightly expanded to avoid too many abbreviations. As the listing was in 1959, some aspects have changed over the years.

Description

Parish church. 13th Century origin, enlarged in 15th Century. Enlarged again and part rebuilt in 19th Century. Stone walls, roofs part tiled, part lead-covered. Parapets to gables, with stone copings.

Nave, north and south aisles of four bays, chancel with vestry on north, north porch, west tower.

Tower

15th Century, of three states, has battlemented parapet, and semi-octagonal stair turret on south. Top stage has 2-light windows with lattice filling. Centre stage has slit window on south. Lowest stage has 3-light west window with Perpendicular tracery.

Porch

Rebuilt 19th Century but incorporates reset 15th Century outer arch. Inner arch has depressed 4-centred head.

North aisle

15th Century, has parapet and added 19th Century buttresses. One 2-light and one 3-light window.

South aisle

19th Century, has battlemented parapet. Three reset 15th Century square-headed 3-light windows, and doorway of similar date with depressed 4-centred arch.

Chancel

19th Century, has two 2-light windows in south wall and a 3-light east window, all in 15th Century style.

Chancel arch, late 14th Century, divided into three arched sections, forming a stone "screen".

Internally

Two centre bays of the north arcade are 13th Century with circular piers and moulded caps. West bay is 15th Century, in similar style. East bay is 19th Century. South arcade is 19th Century, copying the north arcade. Chancel rebuilt in 19th Century.

All roofs 19th Century, of pine, of hammer-beam form in chancel, with arch-braced scissor trusses in nave. Most fittings are 19th Century; the font is 15th Century, built against a pier of the north arcade.
